I spent two hours at the clubhouse, having a quick beer with Josh and Rogue, and then a few of the other guys who showed up. By the time I made it back to my flat, I pushed the key into the lock of the door, but it opened before I could turn it. A furious-looking Destiny stood on the other side, cheeks a ruddy red and lips pressed so thinly that I could barely see the pinkness of them.

“How’d you get in?”

He preened momentarily. “The building super was easily charmed by Destiny’s wit.” His cheeks pinked up. “Where have you been? I’ve been worried sick. Worried sick, Bishop.” He grabbed my arm, yanking me inside and slamming the door shut behind him. Spinning on me, he pointed a finger, freshly manicured with bloodred polish. “I had no phone to message you with, and I didn’t know where you were.”

I held up my palms to him, guilt churning low in my gut. “You said you’d be gone for five hours.”

“I missed you,” he all but screeched. “I couldn’t stand the thought of shopping with you at home, all hurt, so I asked Carolyn to bring me back after a quick browse in a couple of stores and our manicure.”

“Bunny, I didn’t know.” I tried to gather him in close, but he bounced on his toes to avoid my arms.

“Where were you? I came home to an empty apartment. I thought… I thought my father had found you, that he’d taken you away.” His bottom lip wobbled, and my guilt tripled. The last thing I wanted was to worry him.

Again, I reached for him, and this time he didn’t resist as I dragged him into a hug. His hand hit me in the stab wound as he went to wrap his arms around my waist, and I chomped down on my lip hard to stop myself from swearing. I dragged him as close as I could, kissing his head. “Maybe it’s time we get you a phone.”

He made a noise that sounded like a hiccup. “I think we should. I was so scared.”

“I’m sorry.” Another kiss on the head, and he buried his face into my neck. I felt something wet there. “I went to the clubhouse for a few hours, drank some beers with my brothers.”

“I’m a mess,” he muttered, with a small laugh.

“You’re not,” I whispered back, inhaling his cologne and sighing. He always wore such a sweet smell, and this new one suited him perfectly. “But Bunny, I need you to tell me the truth, okay?”

He trembled in my arms, and I knew he was aware of what topic I wanted to dig into.

“What did he do to you, Destiny? I need you to tell me so I can truly protect you. What did that bastard of a father do to you?”

He said something so low, I couldn’t hear him. I tugged him back and caressed his tears away from his cheeks. He stared up at me from watery eyes, his entire mouth shaking.
